The fort

In September 2016, BPS parent Gavin Phillips (with his gardening committee labourers) constructed the timber fort – nicknamed ‘Fortitude’ by the gardening committee for the physical effort required to construct it! Over time, a timber stepper staircase and a slide were added to connect the fort to the rest of the play space.

Salvaged materials used:

  • the substructure was constructed from second hand timber purchased from a local salvage yard
  • the balustrade was constructed from donated second hand jarrah timber which, in its previous life, was a outdoor dining table and roofing battens
  • the slide was rescued from the side of the road
  • the small timber steppers running alongside the slide were donated by a tree lopping business
  • the large timber steppers, which form the timber stepper staircase into the fort, were salvaged from the Garrett Road bridge when its pylons were replaced in 2017.

The six jarrah bush poles at the corners of the fort were the only new materials purchased.
